Our Research

The Tuffs Lab studies how Staphylococcus aureus exploits host inflammatory responses to promote infection and persistence. We are particularly interested in superantigens, pro-inflammatory toxins that target T cells and drive immune activation. Using bacteriology, immunology, biochemistry, infection models, and clinically informed approaches, we investigate how toxin-driven inflammation alters host defence, supports bacterial survival, and contributes to disease severity. Our goal is to identify new ways to limit S. aureus infections by targeting the mechanisms that allow the bacterium to manipulate immunity. Learn more about what we do in the video below.
